Kopi Luwak or ‘Cat-Poo Coffee’ in Bali

- 1 The menu reads “Enjoy this unique coffee today , it’s the only shit we serve in Bella Vista”, so I did.
- 2 And the experience was not a shitty one at all. The cafe claims, “coffee in Legian, that’s worth the journey” and rightly so, as it does sell more that just #poopcoffee. That was just my choice.

Kopi luwak , or civet coffee refers to the beans of coffee berries once they have been eaten and excreted by the Asian Palm Civet . The civet eats the berries and then it passes through the civet’s intestines as beans … coffee beans. In essence, the beans are literally harvested from the faeces of the tree-dwelling civet cat in Indonesia.
In my ignorance I just wanted to try something different. Upon reading more – after I had drank and enjoyed Kopi Luwak, I am now hoping that the coffee plantations are not farming civets for the poop to create the beans that becomes kopi luwak. Were they wild-sourced kopi luwak or farmed civets? I don’t know. They say that their coffee beans are sourced in Sumatra and that is far a I can get.
However, I did try Kopi Luwak or ‘cat-poo coffee’ #Poopcoffee in Legian in Bali and yes – I liked it a lot. It is not dissimilar to Lebanese coffee. It has a very nice, rich and smooth taste. It is known as the world’s most expensive coffee.
I tried this Kopi Luwak at an amazing little café in Legian called Bella Vista Coffee & Juice Bar. Not only was the coffee very good but also the meal was amazing. The entire café also has their own little bakery at the front and a good supermarket next door. It serves a lot more than cat poop coffee of course, and it is a very good addition to the food scene here.
The staff is so very nice, just as the Balinese all over are.
And the experience was not a shitty one at all. The cafe claims, “coffee in Legian, that’s worth the journey” and rightly so, as it does sell more that just #poopcoffee. That was just my choice.
I really hope that my Kopi Luwak was not from a caged animal, but I will still return for regular coffee, great food and very personal service in an immaculate environment.

Kopi luwak really tastes great. The first time I had a sip of it, it was heavenly. Although it’s more expensive than the other kinds of coffee beans, I must say, it really is worth a try! 🙂
I though the taste was very nice too. It was smooth and a little like Lebanese coffee.
Thanks for sharing this info. It is really very good cafe. I should try visit this cafe, when we will get free time. 🙂
I’m travelling back to Bali in September, will I or won’t I try it? It’s tempting however after reading that most are farmed in your article, probably not. Can’t say I’ve seen it advertised when I’ve visited Bali previously tho, perhaps I’ve been a bit oblivious with all the traffic mayhem capturing my attention!
I wasn’t aware at the time of the issues, so would probably stay clear now
I have heard of kopi luwak but have not tried it. This sounds like a memorable experience. I may just have to take a sip if the opportunity comes my way. It would be very hard to try not to think about the cat poop part though.
Once I had ordered it and had my first sip, I forgot about it
I tried the kopi luwak at the Auckland coffee and chocolate show just a few weeks ago. To my surprise, I really enjoyed it. I try not think about the poop.
I didn’t think about the poop after I had ordered it. Funny that.
I associate coffee with travel. Why? Because every coffee comes from specific, special place that has its own very unique features. So, I really envy you for this experience with the ‘cat-poo’ coffee 🙂
I associate coffee and food with travel as I think that they go hand in hand, like you.
I’ve wanted to try kopi luwak for ages but never had money while in Asia. Now I can afford it, I have learnt of the horror of how the animals are kept and don’t want to have it anymore… unless I found a legit place. I wish it was possible!
I agree – I found out more after I had had it.
I heard about this coffee before!! how expensive was the cup of coffee?
Not as expensive as I had imagined, which now worries me.
Paula, I guess I will have to jump on the wagon. I keep reading about Kopi luwak…gotta try it!
Cheer to the Weekend Travel Inspiration Dream Team!
It is a controversial coffee that is for sure. I found out more about it after I had drunk it. Would I have tried it knowing what I do now? Probably not.
Haha Paula, we drove by that spot a month ago on a ride way up north. Also lived in Legian for a minute 2 years ago. Nice review and yep, the kopi luwak ads are all over Bali in some spots. We spent time by the rice terraces north of Ubud in November; ads all over. Ditto on our trip up north, this weasel was omni-present hahaha….Thanks for the fun share.

It is a tricky topic and one that has caused a lot of discussion, but yes we saw signs everywhere in Bali for it too.
Hi Paula, i’m always intrigued about this poop coffee. Everybody I know who tried it said it was really good, and you just confirmed it. From what I gathered, most of the civet coffee being sold are from farmed sources and that even though some vendors claim that their civet coffee beans are from the wild, it’s really hard for them to prove it. Oh, pooh…. But since you said that its taste is not dissimilar to Lebanese coffee I think I’ll satiate my curiosity with Lebanese beans and try to imagine that I’m sipping a civet variety:)
I don’t even think that I thought about the fact it was poop when I was drinking it. I guess that it was so much like Lebanese coffee that I forgot. It was an experience nonetheless.
Lovely place…
I wonder whether you mean that 🙂
