Tamara and Donny make up the blogging team at Turtles Travel. Traveling like turtles, slowly and deliberately, they’ve wandered together since 2004, with no cure for their insatiable wanderlust. TurtlesTravel blog focuses on slow, responsible and sustainable travel.
In deciding where to go, both Tamara and Donmy make this decision. They say “This one is a joint effort. Luckily we share the same travel style – budget, no-frills, love history, culture, food, beach, diving.
As they work together in their field of mobile marketing which is a contract job, Tamara and Donny need to wait until the contract is up, and they are both free to travel at will for as long as they can last with no income.
Deciding who organize flights they say, “This usually consists of dueling laptops, calling out of airport codes and sometimes donating or otherwise working out miles.”
Tamara and Donny say “We’ve never actually used an airport lounge. We fly as little as possible, more for long hauls, and prefer to travel over land.” With stopovers they try to take advantage of any that they have.
Donny says that “Tamara is the researcher, so figuring out airport transport is hers.”
He also says that “Again, Tamara is the mad researcher, leaving no stone unturned. She reads everything she can before departure.”
When organizing accommodation: “On longer trips, we tend not to book much ahead, maybe just the first two nights. We usually wing it and check places out once we arrive”.
They both organize and any interconnecting transport.
With packing “We each are responsible for our own bag. We usually lay everything out, and survey whether the other person has forgotten anything.”
Donny says that “Tamara lost her lock on the very first leg of our last long trip. Never replaced it.”
Tamara says “Donny is much better at keeping track and holding the money, also with currency conversion.”
As they have no house to leave clean this got a cross from them both.
For long trips as far as letting people know that you are away, both Donny and Tamara say “For long trips, it’s a great idea to let credit card companies your itinerary.” With paying inevitable bills they “do everything online as it is, so this doesn’t change for travel”.
Tamara says with finding festivals “Research and just being in a place reveals what’s going on locally.”
Donny says that they “don’t travel with much tech—never even with a laptop yet. We usually get a local SIM if we’ll be somewhere long.”
Turtle Travel say “We’ll try anything once, but are frugal so we try and save for the activities we really love, like diving.”
Tamara takes care of all emails and correspondence.
